Here’s the Secret Little Thing in Contagious Disease Prevention and Immune Boost
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) represents a very low risk to the general public in this country. Still, masks are out. Is there a way better than mask for people like us who live in low risk area but still cannot avoid exposure 100%? Let me start with what was forecasted a year ago.
Before new year 2019, I wrote about the forecast of “warm disease” (a term in Chinese Medicine describing contagious diseases including but not limited to flu, pandemic diseases. In that detailed WeChat post in Chinese about the predictions for Lunar New Year 2019 (also cited in a rarely viewed medium post),where I used the word flu — could be too light but it’s true — instead of detailing the time frame as I did in Chinese post 👇) based on the ancient theory and wisdom of Chinese Medicine, I used “warm disease must come in the winter”:
and set a reminder on the day of Minor Snow. None was out of blind arrogance but based on one of the Medical Classics “Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine”. The English translation of that book usually avoids the key Yun Qi part or just use Pinyin and appear elusive to any reader who’s not well trained in Ancient Chinese Language, not just modern Chinese.
Unfortunately, in a society where Modern Western Medicine has dominated not only the Western world but also modern China, the “native Chinese” Yun Qi theory had not been adopted into China’s own public health system, let alone nobody edits from across the ocean.
Yes I did write again for forecasting this Lunar Year 2020, in a Chinese post on WeChat, and stated in the beginning my view about the current outbreak — if you read that (or an accurate translation of it) carefully it would answer current news subject lines such as “Will Summer kill Coronavirus”, or “Trump: Heat will kill coronavirus”. Due to recent focus on serving our early customers, I did not have time to summarize the post in English, but the short answer is: the situation after March 4 should get better and better, and if it can be thoroughly killed by March 20 — where the host and guest Yun Qi together might lead to fluctuation, then it should stop for good; otherwise, starting April 20 (where the host Yun becomes excessive Fire, Guest Yun becomes insufficient Water, host Qi is King Fire, Guest Qi is Jue Yin Feng Mu), there could be an recurring outbreak if the fire of MERS-CoV is not completely put off by then. Thus, timing wise we only have two months to decide where the ending ends.
Although deep down I trust God more than human wisdom, and have been praying for this Wuhan outbreak without national boundary, the medical classics clearly said they were originally a gift from God and have stood the test of time — in the scale of five thousand years, not just in the scale of time period for any clinical trials.
Going back to those who live outside of China. Yes the risk is low but as a medical entrepreneur with statistical and data science training, I tell this to my friends: Statistics don’t matter that much when it comes to an individual, because it only happens once. You can be the outlier, and that 1% becomes 100% when it happens to you. Yet, given the reasons I wrote in the WeChat post, the situation is getting better from now till March 20, 2020 and hopefully it can be completely off by April 20, 2020, at least for now it’s not that necessary to wear masks outside of China unless you have close contact with, or in a closed space with crowds of people who are at moderate risk.
Well, it’s also not your choice. Since we are in healthcare and work with medical professionals, recently I got quite a few requests from friends who are traveling needing “masks” and completed them with doctors telling me, “our offices seem to have a shortage too”. They are right, the masks have been gone:
Here’s what we have done recently for close friends who have to travel or stay in closed space, with or without mask for protection: think about our ancestors where there were no vaccines or anti-virus synthetic drugs (which becomes a double-edged sword) or masks, bring the ancient wisdom back. “When there is sufficient healthy Qi with righteousness in spirit inside, pathogenic factors have no way to invade the body.” Healthy Qi and righteousness in spirit can be translated into Modern Western medicine terms as strong immune system.
First, do exercises that focus more on training your internal organs instead of training external part of your body, for example, Tai Chi, Eight-Brocade Exercise, other forms of Qi Gong, Yoga, are all great in making your internal organs and immune system strong. Frankly, one of these exercises you like should be practiced all year around, not just when pandemic hits.
Second, apply heat or aroma therapies. For example, most people other than extremely Yin-deficient body constitution type can benefit from moxibustion, a.k.a. moxa, this has been practiced in ancient China, but unfortunately it is not currently widely applied even during this epidemic outbreak. Smoke detector in most US households are also very sensitive when residents apply moxa, most are using less strong moxa patches nowadays. But that still needs some knowledge of which acupressure points to apply. So, is there a substitute or more effective alternative therapy? Yes!
In this article, the author evaluated the clinical efficacy of Pihui Fanggan (translated as preventing from being affected) Sachet, a sachet of traditional Chinese herbs, in preventing influenza and its immune regulation. The conclusion is, PHFGS can prevent influenza effectively by improving the immunity, especially the respiratory mucosal immune function. Although I typically don’t like evaluating traditional medicine using modern approach, since they can miss important concepts and hidden methodologies such as herbal teamwork and synergy, mice are completely different from human and even human variation is huge even with the over-simplicity of controlling factors, difference of in vivo vs in vitro, how and whether or not ingredients can get digested instead of contributing to kidney stone. This comes as no surprise, regardless of conclusion in the articles.
Chinese herbal medicine is a key component of traditional Chinese Medicine (a.k.a. TCM) and has been practiced for thousands of years. Here’s what I shared in Chinese medicine prevention group:
“Avoiding Temperature Dispersion” is one of the Chinese herbal medicine sachet formula. Put the medicine in a small bag, hang it in the car, in the house, or carry it with you wherever you go.
The basic formula is as follows: 40 grams of Pelan, 15 grams of windproof, 15 grams of nepeta, 15 grams of mint, 15 grams of atractylodes, 15 grams of galangal, 15 grams of lemongrass (or iris 15), 10 grams of borneol, and add or subtract others based on the current solar term and where you live.
Divide the above 👆Chinese medicine is divided into a few parts, which can make a few sachets at a time. This method is much better than just passive protection.
It is suitable for most people, especially those with low immune defense system, typically susceptible to colds or coughs, and children over six months old.
1. Pregnant women, asthma patients, and those who are allergic to certain herbs in the formula are prohibited. If allergic symptoms appear after wearing, stop carrying or wearing the sachet.
2. The traditional herbal medicine sachet is volatile. If the taste is too light, you can shake it and pat it after heating in a microwave oven.
